Embedding sustainability in early childhood education and care (ECEC) is more than a trend, or something that's nice to do; it's a necessary shift towards nurturing future generations who are informed, empowered, and equipped to create a sustainable future - where they can thrive in uncertainty. In our new guide, Why Sustainability Matters in Early Childhood, we explore the vital role that early childhood education plays in developing lifelong sustainable habits and values.
The early years are crucial for setting the foundation of lifelong values and behaviours. Children are naturally curious and eager to explore the world and understand their place in it, making it the ideal time to introduce sustainability concepts. By fostering these values early, we reduce the need for behaviour changes later in life, which can be a challenging prospect - we all know behaviour change doesn’t come easy! Early childhood educators have a unique opportunity to model sustainable thinking and behaviours, and shape the way children think and feel about sustainability. It can either be scary and hopeless, or full of exciting opportunities for creativity and innovation! Of course we’d rather focus on the latter!
A healthy environment is essential for overall well-being. Clean air, water, soil, and access to nature contribute to our physical and mental health. ECECs can help children understand the intrinsic link between a healthy environment and their own health and well-being, fostering a deeper connection to nature and a desire to protect it.
Children learn about the world through their senses, and sustainability offers rich opportunities for sensory exploration. Gardening, nature play, cooking, and water play help children connect with nature, understand the importance of conservation, and develop critical thinking skills. These experiences are not just educational but also enjoyable, making learning about sustainability fun and engaging. These are the experiences we remember long into adulthood! Think about your childhood - where were your strongest memories?
Mine were all outside with nature - mud pies, building cubbies in the bush, camping and campfires…🔥
Young children, their families, and ECEC services all play critical roles in creating a sustainable future. Families are children's first and most influential teachers, and their values shape children's understanding of the world. By embedding sustainability in early childhood settings, we empower children and families to live more sustainably. This shared journey strengthens communities and fosters a collective sense of responsibility for sustainability.
Educating children about sustainability is essential for their future. It helps them develop a sense of agency and hope, knowing they can contribute to solving sustainability challenges. Encouraging children to take action, however small, instils confidence and a proactive mindset that will benefit them throughout their lives.
For ECEC services, embedding sustainability offers numerous benefits. It can enhance staff engagement, attract like-minded families, and provide a unique identity to the service. It also presents opportunities for professional development, community engagement, and inter-generational learning. By working together towards sustainability, services can create a positive and dynamic learning environment for both children and adults!
Embedding sustainability in ECEC settings is a powerful way to nurture a generation of thoughtful, responsible, and engaged citizens. The journey towards sustainability is ongoing and evolving, but the rewards—both immediate and long-term—are immense. We invite you to join us in this essential work and to explore the benefits and opportunities that sustainability brings to children, families, and communities.
