Stem thinking in early childhood
STEM Detectives is an innovative and comprehensive program designed specifically for the Early Years Sector. It builds the understanding and capacity of early years educators and families in the principles of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). This enables educators and families to better support children’s natural dispositions for curiosity, creativity and investigative thinking. Our approach to STEM is developmentally appropriate, grounded in play based learning and integrates art and creative expression.
We have designed a program that helps you identify the STEM and the arts that is already happening through everyday activities, and to further extend this thinking. Children are natural scientists who regularly engage in investigation, questioning, hypothesising, wondering and critical thinking. These skills will be increasingly important in the future for their education, career opportunities, problem solving and resilience.
STEM Detectives helps you see what children are doing through the STEM magnifying glass, identifying scientific thinking, mathematical thinking, problem solving, engineering principles and technology (and we don’t just mean computers, tablets and apps!). Once you know what to look for, you will see it everywhere! STEM Detectives will then give you the tools and strategies you need to extend these concepts and provide opportunities for children to continue to develop a love of STEM!
We provide a comprehensive range of resources, tools and professional development to build your confidence and knowledge of STEM as well as artistic thinking. We will help you identify opportunities to integrate STEM into your existing programs without the need for extra documentation or equipment. You can access our resources, tools and professional development as you need them, tailoring a solution to meet the needs of your educators, children and families.
